National Park Council

Snæfellsjökull National Park falls under the Department of Nature Conservation at the Environmental Agency, and the agency falls under the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate. The National Environment Agency manages the national park. The park manager is in charge of the day-to-day management and operation of the National Park. The National Park Council works with the Environment Agency, which is made up of representatives:

  • Snæfellsnes Tourism Association, Þórður Runólfsson
  • The Cultural Heritage Agency of Icealand, Magnús Aðalsteinn Sigurðsson
  • Nature Conservation Association, Anna Hallgrímsdóttir
  • Samút, Association of outdoor recreation partners, Sigurður Guðjónsson
  • Snæfellsbær, Kristins Jónasson (chairman)

The function of the National Park Council is to discuss the implementation plan and priorities for the national park, cooperation in the preparation of the management and protection plan, and strategic issues concerning the national park.
