Hellnar used to be a fishing village. The beach features beautiful rock formations and a cliff that juts out into the sea called Valsnös. Valnös contains Baðstofa, one of the most unusual caves in Iceland, known for its magnificent colour variations that change with light and the tides.

A church was built on the site around 1880 and the current church was consecrated in 1945, which is an annex from Staðarstaður and has been since 1917.

West of the road to the Hellnar is Bárðarlaug.

Bárðarlaug was protected as a natural monument in 1980 and is a small oval tarn in a beautiful cinder cone. Legend has it that Bárður Snæfellsás bathed in the tarn.
