NOTICE: Road Closure on Dritvíkurvegur that lead to Djúpalónssandur due to Construction
Due to construction work, Dritvíkurvegur will be closed to all traffic from Útnesvegur to Djúpalónssandur between May 26 and June 8, 2025. The road down to Djúpalónssandur will be closed for all traffic during this period.

Vermannaleið Hiking Trail
A scenic but challenging trail for experienced hikers, approximately 3 km in length, from the upper parking lot on Dritvíkurvegur down to Dritvík. The trail passes through rough lava fields and takes about 1.5 hours each way. From Dritvík, it’s about a 20-minute (1 km) walk over to Djúpalónssandur.
Nearby Destinations Worth Visiting
- Malarrif and Lóndrangar – A beautiful area for walking and sightseeing, with the Malarrif lighthouse.
- The National Park Visitor Centre at Malarrif – Open daily from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Svalþúfa and Þúfubjarg – A prominent tuff headland just east of Lóndrangar, where thousands of seabirds nest in spring. A short walking trail leads from the parking lot to the cliff edge and continues past Lóndrangar.
Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and be well prepared if choosing to hike.
