The beach between Arnarstapi and Hellnar was protected in 1979. The beach has beautiful and peculiar rock formations and cliffs that have been shaped by the surf.

Skerries and cliffs are teeming with bird life from spring to autumn.

Hellnahraun is a lava field that extends between Arnarstapi and Hellnar. It flowed approximately 4000 years ago from a crater near Jökulháls which is now covered by the glacier.

A 2km hiking trail runs through the lava field between Arnarstapi and Hellnar.

Arnarstapi or Stapi, as the settlement was often called, was a market town and a seaport. The landing site at Stapi is called Stöð and was and is the best one on the outer peninsula.

Arnarstapi is mentioned in Bárðar’s Saga Snæfellsás, and there is a stone sculpture of Bárður by sculptor Ragnar Kjartansson that is a prominent landmark in the area.
