In the coming days, there will be construction work taking place at two popular sites in Snæfellsjökull National Park. On the one hand, work will be carried out to repair the parking lot at Djúpalónsandur, and the road there will be closed until September 22. On the other hand, construction is planned at Saxhóll from September 18 to 22, and the area will be closed to all traffic during the construction period.
At Djúpalónsandur, the construction involves improving the parking area above Djúpalónsandur, which will be paved and marked for buses and cars. The number of parking spaces will increase, resulting in much better use of the area. Those who wish to visit Djúpalónsandur are advised to use the parking area by the main road, from where they can walk along a marked trail. The hiking trail is challenging and takes about 45 minutes.
At Saxhóll, the work involves the finalization of the viewing platform on top of the crater. Benches will be installed in the center of the platform, stone steps will be built down from the platform, and finishing work around it will be completed.
Snæfellsjökull National Park staff will be available as much as possible to inform and guide visitors during the construction period. The park’s visitor centers at Hellissandur and Malarrif are open every day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Hellissandur and until 4:30 PM at Malarrif. We also encourage our visitors to explore the many other beautiful destinations in and around the national park, and information about these can be found here.
