Children's activites

From June 6th to September 12th, rangers offer daily educational hikes in Snæfellsjökull National Park. The hikes are generally easy and suitable for all ages.

Children’s hours will be held at the National Park Center in Hellissandur on Thursdays in July and August. Rangers will offer fun educational hours and games.

In addition, weekly special hikes will be offered every Wednesday in July and August, focusing on specific themes or areas within the national park.

Children's activites

Every Thursday at the National Park Center in Hellissandur in July and August.

Time: 11:00

Duration: 40 minutes

A fun educational session and games for all kids.

Daily walks

Guided walk with Park ranger.

Búðir

Every Monday, the ranger meets visitors in the parking lot at Búðarkirkja

Time: 1:00 PM

Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

Walk with rangers from Búðakirkja to Frambúðir.

 

Malarrif

Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Time: 1:00 PM

Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

Walk with a ranger from the Visitor Center at Malarrifi to Lóndröngur.

June 15th. Wildflower Day – Flower Walk around Rauðhól

At 10:30

On the occasion of Wildflower Day, Snæfellsjökull National Park offers an informative ranger-led hike through Rauðhól. You will see a variety of plants and wildflowers in their natural environment. The hike is easy and suitable for most people. It is a good idea to bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Let’s meet at the parking lot at Rauðhól.

Duration: the walk takes about 1.5 hours.

June 25. Birdwatching at Svalþúfa

Time: 10:30

Meet a ranger at Svalþúfa and take the opportunity to learn about the lifestyle and behavior of the birds there, as well as identify those birds.

July 2. The story by the shore – A hike around Djúpalón and Dritvík

At 10:30

A ranger-led hike through the historical trails at Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík. We start the hike down Nautastígur, pass the test stones and walk across the sand to Sessir. From there, a marked path leads to the historic Dritvík, where hundreds of people used to live during the season. We walk the same way back – with views, history and nature in the foreground.

Meet at the lower parking lot by Djúpalón.

Duration: The walk takes about 1 hour with instruction.

July 9th. From bird cliff to lava – Hiking between Arnarstapi and Hellnar

Time: 10:30

Experience a unique landscape on a walk along Néðstagata, which runs through Hellnahraun along the coastline between Arnarstapi and Hellni. Along the way, you can see the effects of natural forces on the lava – eroded cliffs, crevasses and spectacular views. At Arnarstapi, there is also a rare opportunity to see terns nesting in the cliff crevices. The area is a nature reserve due to its unique rock formations by the sea.

Meet at the parking lot at the port of Arnarstapa.

July 16. Human life and relics – Steam cabins with a ranger

Time: 10:30

Come along on a fun and historical hike through Írskrabrunn, Gufuskálavör and the fish huts on the lava field.

The walk begins at the parking lot at Írskrabrunn.

Duration: the walk takes about 2 hours.

July 23. The mountain and the distance – Hiking to Hreggnasi

At 10:30

The route starts at the footbridge over Móðulækur at the mouth of Eysteinsdalur and continues up to Hreggnasi, which rises 469 meters above sea level. The route is mostly gentle and easy, but becomes steeper as you approach the summit. The view from the mountain is spectacular in all directions, but steep cliffs await you when you reach the summit – caution is therefore essential.

We met at the intersection of Útnesvegur and Eysteinsdalursvegur and walked to the footbridge over Móðulækur at the mouth of Eysteinsdalur.

August 6th. Biodiversity and remains – Hiking around Eyrar and Lambhagatjarnir

Time: 10:30

Walk through Eyrar and Lambhagatjarnir with a ranger. You will see diverse biodiversity and human remains.

Duration: The walk takes about 1.5-2 hours.

Meet at the parking lot at Eyrar.

13. August. Öndverðanes Circle – a longer walk with a ranger

Time: 10:30

You will hike with a ranger through Neshraun and learn about the geology of the area. The hike is quite long, so it is a good idea to bring a snack and water.

Meet at the Vatnsborgar parking lot.

Duration: The walk takes 3 hours.
