Coastal life through the eyes of young artists

Published 09.10.2026 · Guðrún Stefanía

On Thursday, 8 October, an exhibition by fourth-grade students from Grunnskóli Snæfellsbæjar opened at the Snæfellsjökull National Park Visitor Centre. Entitled “What Lives on the Shore?”, the exhibition explores coastal life and is part of the West Iceland Children's Culture Festival.

The students began by exploring the coastal ecosystem at Krossavík, where a park ranger from Snæfellsjökull National Park taught them how to identify different types of seashells and marine snails.

The students were divided into groups of three and began by creating mind maps to explore what fascinated them most about the shore. They then developed their ideas into preliminary sketches.

The students continued their work on canvas, combining textile and visual art techniques. Using fabric scraps, textile paints and yarn, the young artists created drawings and embroidery under the guidance of textile teacher Ragnheiður Guðmundsdóttir and art teacher Inga Harðardóttir.

The staff of Snæfellsjökull National Park are delighted with this beautiful and colourful exhibition and encourage visitors to stop by the National Park Visitor Centre in Hellissandur, which is open daily, to see it for themselves.
