Solar Eclipse Information – Snæfellsjökull National Park
As many visitors already know, a solar eclipse will take place on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, and Snæfellsjökull National Park is one of the best places to experience it.
National park staff will provide regular updates before, during, and after the eclipse to help visitors enjoy their visit safely and responsibly. A large number of visitors is expected, and there will be a great deal of activity throughout the area. Safety planning is being carried out in close cooperation with the Icelandic Police and other emergency response agencies.
Please note that there are no campsites within Snæfellsjökull National Park, and overnight stays in vehicles in parking areas are not permitted.
There are no restaurants or cafés within the national park itself. However, the café at the Snæfellsjökull National Park Centre in Hellissandur is open year-round. During the week of the solar eclipse, a number of food trucks will also be operating in the immediate vicinity of the national park, and restaurants throughout the Snæfellsnes Peninsula will be open to welcome visitors.
Traffic Management – 12 August
A one-way traffic system will be in effect on Road 574 (Útnesvegur), with traffic travelling from Búðir towards Road 579 (Öndverðarnesvegur) from 9:00 am
Most gravel roads branching off Road 574 (Útnesvegur) will be closed.
Road 579 to Öndverðarnes will be closed to private vehicles. Shuttle buses will operate every 30 minutes from 11:00 am free of charge, between the road closure point and Öndverðarnes.
Parking fees apply at all parking areas within the national park.

Malarrif Visitor Centre
Open daily 10:00–16:30, except 12 August, when it will remain open until 19:00.
