Ranger Program 2025

From June 6 to September 12, park rangers will offer daily guided walks in Snæfellsjökull National Park. The walks are generally easy and suitable for all ages.
Children’s programs will be held at the National Park Visitor Centre in Hellissandur on Thursdays in July and August. During these program, rangers will lead fun educational activities and games.
In addition, weekly themed walks will take place every Wednesday in July and August, focusing on special topics or specific areas within the national park.
Everyone is warmly invited to participate in our summer events.
Children’s programs
Every Thursday at the National Park Visitor Centre in Hellissandur, in July and August

Daily Guided Walks
Daily Guided Walks with a Park Ranger
Malarrif
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Time: 1:00 PM
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Join a park ranger for a guided walk from the Visitor Centre at Malarrif to Lóndrangar.
Búðir
Every Monday, a park ranger meets visitors at the parking lot by Búðakirkja (Búðir Church).
Time: 1:00 PM
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
The walk goes with the ranger from Búðakirkja to Frambúðir.

June 20th – Nordic wildflower day – Flower walk
At 10:30 AM
Duration: 1 ½ hours
Starting point: Rauðhóll parking lot
In celebration of the Nordic Wildflower Day, Snæfellsjökull National Park invites you to join a ranger walk around Rauðhóll. You will explore a variety of plants and wildflowers in their natural habitat. The walk is easy and suitable for most people. It’s recommended to bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes.
June 25th – Birdwatching at Svalþúfa
Time: from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Starting point: Sightseeing platform at Svalþúfa
Meet a ranger at Svalþúfa and take the opportunity to learn about the behavior and habits of the local birdlife, as well as how to identify different bird species.
July 2nd -History by the Shore – Walk through Djúpalón and Dritvík

Duration: 1 hour
Starting point: The lower parking lot by Djúpalón
A walk through the historic sites of Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík. The walk begins down Nautastígur, past the famous lifting stones, and across the sand to Sessum. From there, we follow a marked path to the historically rich Dritvík, once home to hundreds of people during the fishing seasons. We will return the same way, enjoying stunning views, history, and nature along the way.
July 9th – Lava and Ocean – A Guided Nature Walk from Arnarstapi to Hellnar

Duration: 1 ½ hours
Starting point: The parking lot by the harbor at Arnarstapi.
Experience unique landscapes on a hike along Neðstagata, which runs through Hellnahraun along the coastline between Arnarstapi and Hellnar. Along the way, you’ll witness the powerful forces of nature shaping the lava field – eroded rocks, gorges, and breathtaking views. At Arnarstapi, there’s also a rare opportunity to observe puffins nesting in the cliffs. The area is a nature reserve due to the distinctive rock formations by the sea.
July 16th – Life and Remains – Exploring Gufuskálar’s Heritage

Join us for an enjoyable and historical hike through Írskrabrunn, Gufuskálavör, and the old fish storage sites along the lava’s edge.
July 23rd – Valleys and Views – Guided Hike up Hreggnasi

Duration: 2 hours
Starting point: The intersection of Útnesvegur and Eysteinsdalsvegur
We begin at the footbridge over Móðulæk at the mouth of Eysteinsdalur and hike up to Hreggnasi, which rises 469 meters above sea level. The trail is mostly gentle and easy, but it becomes steeper as you approach the summit. The view from the top is breathtaking in all directions, with steep cliffs visible at the summit—so caution is advised.
August 7th – Traces of Life – Nature and Settlement Walk at Eyrar

Hike through Eyrar and Lambhagatjarnir with a Park Ranger. You’ll explore diverse wildlife and remnants of human settlements.
August 13st – Geology Underfoot – Guided Hike at Öndverðarnes

Duration: 3 hours
Upphafsstaður: Vatnsborgir parking lot
Join us for a guided hike through Neshraun and learn about the geology of the area. The hike is relatively long, so it’s a good idea to bring snacks and water.
